Anticipation

Capture an athelte on the starting line with an extensive slow-motion shot: Following the referee’s command, the athlete assumes a prone position, with tense muscles engaging with the skeleton, feet placing on the pedals, arms hanging down, palms on the ground, and the center of gravity lowering, marking the body’s entrance into an intermediate moment. At this very moment, the body is positioned on the overlapping interface between the past and the future, carrying the consequences of the previous stage of movement while anticipating the explosive action triggered by the gunshot. Meanwhile, this slow-motion shot disrupts the homogeneous flow of time, exaggerating the intervals between moments, unveiling the transitional process of the body from relaxation during warm-up and the explosion of the start.

If this shot could be infinitely extended, the preparatory action bridging the gap between two states would be anchored to the moment itself, thus bearing the weight of the overlapping past and future. On the other hand, this body in this moment is already obligated to adhere to athletic rules, achieve rankings, and fulfill the expectations of others. In any case, the next moment following this preparatory action, irrespective of its acknowledgment of external factors, cannot evade the reality of their existence.

This simplifies into a relatively clear conceptual statement for this exhibition: the body, in a preparatory action, is anchored in the intermediate stage between what has already happened and what is yet to come, simultaneously bearing the constraints imposed by the external reality while preparing to respond to the latter.

The artists participating in this exhibition are from the Free Art Studio of the China Academy of Art, currently in a preparatory period as they are about to transition to the next social stage. The exhibition aims to focus on the psychological realities and corresponding responses they face at this juncture: the social attributes of clothing and naked bodies, the dynamics of giving and depriving within intimate relationships, the bodily dissection brought about by self-objectification, various symptoms defined as “pathological,” along with the suppression of the patriarchal system. While the artists’ sensitive attention to their mental and physical states at this stage may seem introspective, it negatively shapes the social environment of their individual subjects. Artists make more constructive endavours by revealing the “possible worlds” through structural mapping of meta-novels, establishing game rules, and employing various forms of inner imagination. By contrast, the exhibiting artists have not avioded the ket issues such as the illusory effects of technical images and the challenging authenticity of social conditions created under specific ideologies in the context of today’s image society.

If we were to solely discuss the various topics and corresponding discussing through the relatively standard discourse of contemporary art mentioned above, it might prematurely lead experienced viewers to quickly associate their creations with the mainstream topics of today’s contemporary art world. However, such premature conclusions are bound to oversimplify the complex layers of their personal worlds behind the creations. Therefore, this exhibition does not aim to continue weaving them into a complex theoretical context, it seeks to present their mental and physical states at this moment during the transitional stage just before graduation— at this moment, they carry not only the traces of past experiences such as “training,” self-education, campus shaping, and even larger social shaping, but also encompass the critical observations, serious contemplation, earnest rebellion, and bold strategies to confront a world beyond the campus in the next moment. All is ready, and the best is yet to come.
