This lecture, based on the newly published book Resonance: Sound in Contemporary Chinese Art, explores how sound has been reinvented within the context of contemporary Chinese art. Sound art liberates sound from the paradigm of music; it is not necessarily “audible,” but instead makes listening a mode of perception. It allows archives to speak their stories, restores vanished memories, reveals obscured places and bodies, and turns listening into both field notes and a form of resistant narration. Through technology, it recalls erased worlds; through exhibitions, it reshapes local experience; through the ear, it rewrites the history of contemporary art.

The lecture will revisit key works, events, and networked platforms since the “85 New Wave,” and propose four methodological keys for engaging with sound art: intention, space, material and technology, and theme. Sound is not merely a medium—it is a resonant structure that reorganizes our ways of coexistence. By listening, we hear not only sound itself, but also the configurations of time, place, and life.
