Inter-World-View
(Inter)
(Interview)

Fleshy School
(Hegelian Dancers)

“Welcome to the invisible revolution”

Passepartout Duo+AnyOne
(May you live in interesting places)

Inter-World-View
An Inter-action of Worldviews
An Interview of the World
Inter-World-View, first launched in 2019, is the annual program sponsored by China Academy of Art – ICAST, catered by The Centre for Chinese Visual Studies and coordinated by CAA Art Museums. Since the Open Call was issued on 20th Sep., we received inquiries and applications from more than 100 youth groups in various fields from different countries and regions. We learned, discussed, and compared our notes for nearly a month, and now we can announce with full expectation that 15 of them will be invited to co-construct the scene of communication in the first session of IWV.
These groups from all over the world shall gather in China Academy of Art, Hangzhou. Every day in the ten days’ time (2019.11.11-11.20), different groups will exhibit and perform their own “work” and “take up” and decorate their own space; other groups will be the audience, inquirers, and commentators, and also the lecturers in another day.
We hope that, through collective decoration, exhibition, performance, debate, and living, those people with specific working environment, problem awareness, way of creation, state of life — i.e. with unique Worldview, can come up with in-depth communication, and on the basis, form a far-reaching working net for the future.
IWV is going to be a long-term program. What it hopes to probe into is a whole set of worldviews on living and working, involving techniques about “ how we can live together.” What it hopes to connect is not only the field of art in a narrow sense, but a much more dispersed one: philosophers, scientists, writers, curators, architects, filmmakers, artists, musicians, dancers and even craftsmen, farmers, cooks…… those people who work in but can get out of specific walks of life, come into surpassing thoughts and into metaphysical dimensions, and together, have a will to change the world, in a world which becomes more and more specialized and divided.
IWV tries to abandon the dominance of “inauguration” in the original exhibition mechanism, and probes into some combination of exhibition, forum, performance and workshop – or nothing but “communication” itself. The process of communication itself is the constructing of the locale.
Inter-World-View 2019 also tries a new mechanism: “report groups” who are invited, are going to be the “working groups” of the IWV program at the same time. They will respectively be responsible for exhibition curation, space design, posters and visualization, arrangement and construction, filmmaking, simultaneous interpretation, and even making staff dinner as a work or performance. They will participate in a more magnificent collective action with their own working talents.
We are expecting that, in the first session of Inter-World-View, the 15 different groups will together “ interview the world” and build up a live communication on worldviews, a spacetime that surpasses daily lives.
In 2019, let’s interview the world.
Participators of IWV 2019
Jiuzhang Society
“Everything wants somewhere to dwell.”
For thousands of times, I search for Yuzhang of the legend, the glorious tree where ninety thousand Peng rests. Pillars shelters the people; vessels carry the wise of the coming decades.
The crown of camphor is excellent enough to shade under the sun; the water in Canglang River is clean enough to wash the tassel on my hat.
For a long time, Jiuzhang Society has devoted itself to reveal, construct, connect, and reintegrate social elements with persistent cultural value and fruit concrete architectures, products, publications, or studies. Jiuzhang Society believes that human beings know and locate themselves though the attempt to connect with things. Once this connection is hindered, veiled, or mediated by society, people will lose the purist spiritual connection with things. On the scene of IWV, Jiuzhang Society is going to exhibit several practices on social spaces in a progressive way, and display the “disintegration-integration” and “veiling-unveiling” states of “entrusting spectrum” in the contemporary society.
Jiuzhang Society is also the working team of Inter-World-View 2019 for space design on the site. It will create and pre-build the “place of entrustment” before every group arrives.

Fleshy School
“Hegelian Dancers”
Fleshy School is a group from Cali (Colombia), composed of visual arts, literary and body practitioners, who have a shared interest in history, identity, cosmology, art, and ultimately the body as a channel of all of those ideas. By deconstructing the “lecture” format and including live dance and music performance, the group engages in an active questioning process that analyses body movements as research material, inquiring about the world-views we have absorbed in our flesh, the ecology that manifests in our listening practices, the translatability of rhythm across artistic media, and the possible bridges between individual and collective.

Chongqing Work Institute
“Chongqing as method”
Chongqing Work Institute (“Chong Gong Institute”) is a self-organized institute that sets Chongqing as the research object. Different from a traditional work institute, the “Chong Gong Institute” is above all an open platform towards the city. Chongqing is no longer merely a geographic signifier, but the constructor of a spatial method and research theater. Chongqing gathers all towns, countrysides, mountains, water-lanes, ruins, and construction sites, as well as a significant amount of industrial remains and defense shelters left in the earlier stages. The municipality was later dragged into the supply chains of globalization and is now starting its new era of “Intelligent City”— as an essential mainland base and pilot field for artificial intelligence and robotics. All these have captured the attention of a group of creators, who founded the “Chong Gong Institute.” “Chong Gong” neither sees Chongqing as the sole working area, nor performs field projects within geographical limits, or tries to create “local specialties” under some artistic context in a fixed transformational way. The actual purpose instead is to find out how to renew the intrusive observation of frameworks, how to prevent self-estrangement, how to rationally construct a culture with reflection, and a kind of subjectivity in a present world dominated by globalization. All of these thrusts us to get back to the scene, back to the field, back to Chongqing. Its variety and complexity enable “Chongqing” to be both the object and the measure.

The Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP)
“Computing the Atmosphere: From Chaotic Reality to Modeling Order”
The atmosphere shapes ecology. The computer modeling of the atmosphere is a dividend accumulated through centuries of scientific progress. The brave attempt to “steal the secret from nature to enlighten the human world” triggered the rise of computational fluid dynamics. Bit by bit, it depicted the cambered world composed of atoms into projection matrices on bit spaces by maths and physics formulas. The reality, however, does not change linearly but stays chaotic; a gap is always left between a circle and a square. Science and religion differ in that the former admits its perpetual falseness. If disasters, pollution, and climate change were doomed to happen, prediction itself would no longer be meaningful; if atomic space and bit space could seamlessly match and connect, how then could we prove the existence of the human brain.
The Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) brought three PhDs to this year’s IWV. All three are students of researcher Wang Zifa and have a research focus on computer modeling and predicting of the atmosphere. The group expects to draw inspiration for science from the arts. In our time, natural science research has reached its bottleneck.

Performing Arts Research Lab (PeARL)
“Re-presents Arts in Space and Time”
The Performing Arts Research Lab (PeARL) at Texas Tech University re-presents performing arts researches through scientific data and seeks the active collaboration of science and art from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives. It re-presents arts through science and presents humanity through the integration of science and art. PeARL uses a combination of interdisciplinary experimental and computational methods to address fundamental questions about the composition, performance, and reception of music, dance, and the visual arts. The group is highly creative in its approach to scientific inquiry while also using systematic, scientific methodologies to investigate its artistic intuitions. When data is re-imagined in auditory and spatial processes, the exchange of information transcends disciplinary boundaries to become an exquisite experience.

SISU Forum
“Translation connects the world.”
SISU Forum is a multilingual youth academy from Shanghai International Studies University. With its team members’ various language proficiencies and research interests, SISU Forum has long been dedicating to promoting “translation” between interdisciplinary knowledge and problem awareness through workshops, salons, lectures, etc. At IWV, SISU Forum attempts to intensively present and discuss the deformation and connections caused by “translation” in the form of “morning reading programs.” From linguistics and semiotics to the more general problem of “translation,” the group pays attention to the discrepancies alongside the “translation” process in terms of form, expression, and function, based on which the international communication network is being organized.
SISU Forum is also a working team of Inter-World-View, serving as multilingual interpreters.

DevolutioN
“Where is the boundary of the public?”
DevolutioN is from Amoy and has long dedicated to connecting different media and developing its planning and designing via architecture as a basic model. It discusses social psychology derived from architecture by means of spatial intervention. For DevolutioN and for different groups that coexist in the same space and at the same time, using a device project named US, which makes the borderline of the public visible, and acts as a measuring scale. It is just an excellent space culture model to reach the boundary between the public and the private.

Institute for the Art of Tropical Disease
“The symptoms are repeatedly knocking on the desktop.”
The Institute for the Art of Tropical Disease, co-initiated by Li Yifan, Lan Haiqi, Yu Xudong, and man yu, is grounded in the realities of southern China. As a metaphor, “tropical diseas” not only implies the discomfort encountered during the process of modernization but is also a thought of a scene outside the institutionalized perception. The Pearl River Delta, the first region in China to open up and reform, has accumulated a large number of conflicts andphenomena in the process of rapid urbanization for the past few decades, which are still not fully understood. We are well-aware of the speech’s paradox: it is both revealing and obfuscating, thus asking the actors to continuously return and to keep the body present at all times. By confronting our own reality, we hope to formulate reflections on real encounters and attempt to make changes with a creative mode of perception. We believe that knowledge germinates in the context of reality and is relevant to every single individual; it can address to the unequal mobility and the divide between individuals caused by structural factors. For instance, in the project of An Individual as a Society , we try to apply psychoanalysis to art practice, thus rediscovering the truth in individuals who are seen by each other. When the individual is understood as a part of the social entity, the social order operates within the subject and redefines the starting point of practice in the latitude of the subject’s reality.

They produce art works involving interactive Audio-Visual impromptu live performances, program design and development, social media irony, and social data manipulation. The members of RMBit bit possess their independent dimension as individual artists, as well as the search for “synchronous” interaction and connections in group creation: the synchronous experience of senses (sight, hearing, touch),the multi-layer, simultaneous combination of sounds, programs and images, the synchronization and asynchronization between different artists’ parallel tasks, and the audience who also interact and attempt to join the “synchronization“ during live performances … With the most cutting-edge creative work at the current time, we are in expectation of such Audio-Visual performance, from which we can hear the echoes detected in the data abyss of the contemporary era and emerges the ever-changing face of data in the process of social integration.

Project AnotherLand: Invisible Revolution
“Welcome to the invisible revolution.”
“AnotherLand” is a folk public-welfare program concerning ecological & environmental protection and humanitarianism. It was launched in 2009 at Qingdao (Laoshan). The program is devoted to the study and the exploration in the domain of technology, economy, cultural, and education so that the universal anxiety of our time might be overcome and a purer spirit reached. Every explorer is a co-founder, who will exist in the resonance of each other’s mind and remain open to every possibility of life. Between 2009 to 2035, the program seeks to rebuild through actions the natural, social and spiritual attributes of “homeland”, to reflect on the harms that humans have inflicted on each other due to the ineptitude of understanding, and to practice new ways of life and search for the integrity of time and space of people’s life in contemporary time. The IWV project brings together four founders who have spent years cogitating on and extending the boundaries of different spheres of society. The four founders try to rediscover the typical operation mode and working method that may be hidden in their respective or crossing the practice track and their independent and overlapping behavioral line, to form a visible sample of their world view through these undefinable accidents and inevitability.

The North State
“In the spare time we built a… “
“The North State” is a series of stories that revolve around a piece of land in the southern suburb of Linfen, Shanxi Province, a small forest on the edge of the land and four people in the ground. These people meet, combine, talk, each node of decisions seemed to be enormously dramatic, but turned out to be the most ordinary: absurd yet self-consistent. A nation is a big family, an imaginary community, an extension of a small family. How about someone seriously building a unit between the big and the low? “The North State” thus is created, whose members include Gephi experts, creator, and maintainer of myasthenia gravis communities, relevant groups include lawyers, etc. Members in the project act as a group, and they industriously take farming as their vocation. However, deep inside the question and rethink all given definitions, and reflect upon the question “whether there should be a question.” At this point, the concept of “home and country” appears to be abstract and concrete at the same time, and it has become a concern for the real life of every ordinary individual.

Passepartout Duo+AnyOne
“May you live in interesting places”
“Passepartout Duo+AnyOne” is a team of sounds that creates with locality and across media. It takes music as a new universal language communicating with specific environments and events. Team member Nicoletta Favari, the pianist, and the percussionist Christopher Salvito have traveled many years, covering many places around the world. They are exposed to the influence of continuously changing locations, capturing the self-interpreted music to give it back to the locals. They also create the possibility of multiple melodies at the crossing area of different cultures and regions through interdisciplinary collaboration, music experiments, and immersive music performances. At the site of IWV, Passepartout Duo+AnyOne will “exchange” sounds in a way in which individuals reconstruct the group and sound reconstructs the music. “AnyOne”/” heterogeneous “individuals in the team will co-create and together voice. After sunset, they will immediately respond to IWV’s daily site of communication with improvised and speechless music.

Midday Hill
“Roaming Novels”
Midday Hill, founded in 2015, was named after an already missing bus stop in a community. It has eight members. The following year witnessed the creation of Midday Hill’s film Roaming. “Roaming” is the way Midday Hill walks, and Hangzhou is where the walk begins. What Midday Hill exchanges with the city encompasses not only the scenery but countless clear or unclear stories as well. As a group that deals with image, Midday Hill wishes to connect the perceptual experience and imagination of creators and viewers, explore the literary space between fragments, and unfold the folded narrative within the “other than this” from here to there. Walking in the garden of branching lanes, rambling around the chaos and creases in the world, it writes an image novel collection shaped by everyone’s memory and illusions.
Midday Hill is also the work team of Inter-World-View and undertakes the documentary filming task. “Shooting” is precisely the presentation of self and “interview” the interaction with others.

SUPER DESSERT
“Fermentation is a controlled connection”
The background of “SUPER DESSERT” members are from sculpture and architectural. They take “food” as the object of creation and combine the routine of “eating” with the concept of space construction and sculpture through the “tour, feast and ceremony” of food. Using food to mobilize feelings and decompose perception, and slowing down the movements of eating, they try to reversely resist the accelerated desert-reality through the subject’s cognition and experience of food. On the scene of IWV, “fermentation” is the team’s core topic. Meanwhile, for this inter-world-view2019’s on-site food creation team, every day’s food feast is not only a performance but also an exchange.
Fermentation not only implies infinite time but also constitutes the starting point and process of “relationship.” With the progress of the IWV daily project, the traces in the space and the regular interaction with other teams will also become the objects of “fermentation,” which will carry out food remanufacturing experience (shi yan) in a progressive narration.

BluePrintPlug
“Mapping the world”
BluePrintPlug is composed of sophomore students from the School of Innovative Design, China Academy of Art. It is also the working team of Inter-World-View 2019 for visual design.
Tracing back to the content and the schematic score of the Heluo graphics, the members treat “diagram” as a production practice mode of information transformation and knowledge sorting, combining the overall knowledge structure and the individual concerned to develop a differentiated narrative and analysis. With systematic and serialized clue extraction and space/time-crossing comparison as the primary method, they aim to map the world, penetrate the social structure and the daily world, to build and design a creative blueprint.
